Distinguished Artist Competition

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY:

All pianists and instrumentalists of high school age whose teachers are members of SMEA in good standing

REPERTOIRE:

Four memorized compositions, one in each of following categories:

Baroque, Classical, Romantic/Early Impressionistic, Modern

Examples for piano students:

Baroque - J.S.Bach

2-part Invention excluding C, F, Bb, A minor

3-part Invention

Prelude AND Fugue as a set

Classical - Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert

Sonata-allegro movement only

Romantic/Early Impressionistic - Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Debussy

Modern - Gershwin, Dave Brubeck, Babbitt

Instrumentalists: Standard unaccompanied solo and/or concertos with piano accompaniment

Student provides own accompanist who is not his teacher

ADJUDICATION:

By two independent judges.

Two participants may tie for one winning place; maximum of 3 winners in total, or no winner at all

Judges’ decision is final

AWARDS

First Place Winner - personalized plaque and $100 cash

Second Place Winner - personalized plaque and $75 cash

Third Place Winner - personalized plaque and $50 cash

Non-winner receives Certification of Merit

Winners must perform in Winners’ Recital to receive awards; no make-up performance*

*Teachers please clear dates with student before registering

Each winner will perform in recital 2 pieces from his auditioned repertoire, selected by the adjudicators, whose combined timing is approximately 10 minutes.

FEE

$45 per student

One check per teacher, payable to SMEA

Parents’ checks will not be accepted
