Student Evaluation Program
PURPOSE: To provide an opportunity for piano students of ALL levels to be evaluated in a not so formal setting. This is NOT a competition.
ELIGIBILITY: Participating students’ teachers must be members of SMEA in good standing.
REPERTOIRE Repertoire and/or technical studies which are:
l. adequately prepared
2. appropriate to allow the adjudicator to make a fair and meaningful assessment
3. the choice and amount of repertoire and/or studies are selected by the teacher; however, arrangements and simplified material will NOT be permitted in Awards Recitals. No photo copies may be used for adjudication.
EVALUATION: Each student will sign up for a 10-, 15-, 20-, 25-, 30-, 45-, and 60-minute slot of time. The teacher selects the appropriate time length according to the amount of repertoire. As a general guideline, allow approx. 1/3 of the time for playing, the remaining 2/3 for discussion.
At the heart of this program is a mini master class for each student and verbal evaluation by the adjudicator; students, parents and teachers may ask questions.
The adjudicator will also use an evaluation checklist and may include a few brief written comments.
With permission from the adjudicator, and depending on the preference of the student, parents and teacher, the entire evaluation process may be video taped.
Performance may be from memory or with music.
AWARDS: The student will receive one of the following awards: 
Certificate with Gold Medal - memorized & performed with distinction
Certificate with Silver Medal - memorized & performed with merit
Certificate - memorized & performance passing
Certificate with Gold Seal - non-memorized & performed with distinction
Certificate - non-memorized & performed with merit
Students who have received Gold Medals for a total of 5 and 7 years (need not be consecutive years) will earn trophies; seniors with 9 years of Gold Medals will receive a special Nine-Year Senior Award; those with 10 or more years of Gold will receive plaques.
AWARDS RECITAL: Sunday March 20, 2011 1:00 - 3:30 pm
Christ Church United Methodist, 300 Ridge Road, Fair Haven NJ
Performance in Awards Recital is required in order to receive trophies/plaques. There will be no make ups. Exceptions will be considered, when written proof has been submitted, only in cases of illness and death in family.
Students performing in Awards Recital must arrive in time and stay for the entire duration of the concert, including the awards presentation ceremony. Those leaving early will not receive their awards. No exceptions.
LOCATION: At teachers’ own studios or Brookdale Community College. Teachers with few participants may pool their students at one colleague’s studio. However, any one studio MUST HAVE enough students to occupy the adjudicator for a total of 6 hours.
